Reframed: Keep on Fighting with Supernatural

How would you feel if you were in a war and fighting, witnessing countless deaths with each passing day? Would you run away to save yourself, or keep on fighting knowing that at any given moment, you might take your last breath and walk straight into the arms of death? In the book All Quiet on the Western Front and the T.V show Supernatural, these are the thoughts that go through the minds of the characters.

In both stories, the characters used to live normal and easy lives. They would either go to school in the morning or work, or come back with food on the table every day. Now they are fighting to save their country risking their lives, and barely eating, yet sometimes wonder if it is even worth it, with all the deaths that occur. They just want to go back to their normal lives without the worry and fear of getting shot at any moment. They want to give up, get up, and leave, but know that they can’t.

In All Quiet on the Western Front, many soldiers walk into war; proud, energetic, and looking forward to it. They then soon face the harsh realities of war and how gruesome it can be. Blood, explosions, and countless deaths everywhere, day and night. For this group of soldiers and recruits in the Second Company, 150 men came in, but only 32 came back alive. The war still isn’t over and they still have to keep fighting. These things make them rethink what they have gotten themselves into and sometimes just want to run away. Many actually do try and run away, while others know what is best for the nation even if it costs their own lives. They know that if they run away, then there is nobody left to protect and fight for their country.

In Supernatural, this is the same idea that goes on the minds of Sam and Dean from time to time. They are fighting a war against demons and mythical beasts that are wreaking havoc onto the world. The monsters are on a rampage killing everyone they come across, throughout the country. Everyone they know and love is dead; their families and many hunters they work with. Sometimes they just want to give up and quit doing what they do, because they can’t stand the losses that keep on happening in their life. They are fighting an ongoing war that seems to be going nowhere, which makes no sense to keep on fighting.

These characters from the book and show all have something in common though. They know that if they stop hunting the monsters or fighting the war and stop risking their lives to protect everyone, then who is there to do it for them? Nobody. This is why as hard as it is for them, there is no quitting no matter the cost. Without them, then all hope is lost since nobody else is up for the job. They are fighting for their country, to try and save as many of their loved ones as possible, no matter the cost. They are soldiers, and must do what is right, and it is in their mindset to never back down no matter how grave the situation may be, and just be prepared for anything.
